360 TB disk can store data for more than a million years

Details

In the futurewe could store data on glass media which will able to read more than a million years. According to researchers Jingyu Zhang, University of Southampton, this new form of memory should allow storage of up to 360 TB data per disc and withstand temperatures up to 1000 °C.
This technology use fast "femtosecond " lasers that allow writing in nanostructures of crystals. These lasers, emitting brief and powerful light signals encode information in three layers of nanostructured point only five microns from the surface of the glass. Researchers claim that the laser writes data in five dimensions - point size, orientation in space and three-dimensional position within the nanostructures. This way of writing  results with mentioned durability and density.
