Digital speech processing in modern information technologies, No. 036054, 2002 -

Head: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Digital processing of speech is a very important basis of many modern information technologies that we meet in everyday life. It is an integral part of modern systems of digital telephony, systems for automatic speech recognition, systems for speech synthesis, systems for communication of people with a computer, systems for transmission of a voice signal with an Internet protocol, teleconference systems, electronic mail systems, etc. The processes of suitable speech signaling, as well as the procedures for quantization of model parameters are very important in speech coding systems. A significant part of the research within the project will be focused on the development of new procedures and algorithms for modeling and speech coding, which as the final goal will be applied in most of the above technologies, which will be based on high quality and low speed of digital transmission. Most important systems will be based on the process of the process of the process.

Design of analog and digital systems using optimization procedures, No. 036029, 2002 -

Head: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The development of high-speed computers in recent years has stimulated the development and application of optimization procedures. Based on optimization procedures, a number of new as well as modifications of existing methods for the design of analog and digital signal processing systems have been created. Through research carried out within our previous projects, optimization procedures have been successfully implemented in the design of optimal analog and recursive digital filters and two-channel filter syllables. The proposed project aims to improve existing and develop new methods for the development of analog and digital systems, based on modern optimization procedures. The practical contribution will be made from the assumption that the integral criteria for the design of optimal filters, i. The intention is to develop new methods for signal processing, especially in the field of digital filters and the signal distribution.

Optimization of antialiasing filters, No. 036-124, 1998 - 1999

Head: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The development of electronic technology causes an increasing application of digital signal processing. The critical location in the systems that process the signal in the discrete (digital) domain is analogous to (A/D) conversion. In the process of time-discretion of continuous signal, the so-called overlapping of spectrum (aliasing). Aliasing is prevented by filtering the signal before the A/D conversion. The use of sigma - delta A/D converters reduces the requirements on filters for prefiltration, but their application is limited to relatively low frequencies. On the other hand, the use of classical filter approximations often does not meet the requirements in the frequency and/or time-time-time-time domain. The existing procedures for the optimization of filters will be used in relation to various inputs.

Implementation of processor cores on a programmable logic circuit

Head: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The request for short time development of the device has led to the standardization of hardware modules, so-called cores. The developed cores are offered to the global market, in the form of ready-made packages for implementation in a certain technology. The topic of the proposed project is the development of cores for industrial applications, and their implementation. The project plans to develop hardware for two dedicated processors: a stack processor and a processor for the execution of "Java byte" code. The stack processor is intended for industrial applications using interpretive languages, and it is important for the code execution of the specific industrial systems that use the Internet, such as intelligent sensors, modules for automatic process management, etc.

Technical classroom system for remote lectures (teleroom) significantly lower costs of realization than existing systems

Head: Prof. Damir Seršić, PhD

Classrooms based on classical analog technology, due to their high price, have been implemented in only a few locations in Croatia, while the needs of the academic community are significantly higher.
In the preparatory study, the causes of high costs were analyzed in the previously realized telephony in Croatia. They are concentrated in several items:
1.) Architectural modifications of the room. Due to the complex conditions of simultaneous video recording and computer or video projections, it is necessary to provide very complex lighting systems, i.e. darkening of the room. Simultaneous recording and reproduction of audio signals requires special procedures of acoustic preparation of the room, and expensive audio devices. Professional audio, video, projection, computer and communication equipment requires trained operators, and the accommodation of operators and equipment requires the construction of a special overhead space (control rooms). Architectural modifications of the so far realized classrooms range from 200-400 thousand kuna. Furthermore, due to a large number of devices, some users of the classrooms also opt for the installation of very expensive systems for automatic equipment management (half a million kuna).
2.) Complex and expensive audio equipment. It is necessary to provide systems for recording lecturers and audience, as well as reproduction from various media. Audio signals from various sources are mixed in several independent groups, some of which are referred to local sound system, and others to remote locations. The appearance of microphones and echoes is more complex than in the usual circumstances due to the reflections caused by both the geometry of the local room and the remote locations. All this leads to the use of expensive professional equipment to suppress the microphone or echo. The prices of audio equipment range up to 400 thousand kuna.
3.) Complex and expensive video equipment. In all of the so far realized TVs, there is a number of cameras 3-5, which leads to the need for professional video directing devices and for remote camera management. The complete processing of video signals is done by analogue devices, so each of the communication devices must have devices for digitalization of video signals. The prices of video and projection equipment range up to 800 thousand kuna.
4.) Expensive communication equipment. Exchange of information between remote locations is done through communication networks: ATM, ISDN or IP. For the purpose of transmitting video and audio signals, expensive devices are used, which in addition to the communication part have digitalizers of analog video and audio signals. Prices vary depending on the applied technologies, and range from 90 - 160 thousand kuna.
The following solutions are proposed:
1.) Minimal architectural room modifications using advanced projection devices (without the need for blackout), using sensitive digital video cameras (with minimal correction of existing lighting), and software algorithms to suppress microphones or echoes. A significantly smaller number of pieces of equipment are placed in the cabinet or desk, instead of the overhead room.
2) and 3) The prices of electronic equipment are in a high reverse-proportional correlation with the mass of production, which far more affects its price than the technical complexity itself. Instead of expensive professional video and audio equipment, it is proposed to use standard components, mostly computer peripherals, and the bulk of the work is transferred to software, i.e. to powerful low cost digital computers. A smaller number of devices also results in easier handling, without the need for an expensive automation system (the order of half a million kuna). Due to the inability to implement all technical systems of the classroom using only standard components, it is proposed, within this project, to create those components that are missing for system integration.
4.) The proposed solution will be based on low-cost communication technologies, video and audio signals will be processed in digital form on a computer, on which communication algorithms will be implemented, through standard peripheral cards.
In preparatory research, the project manager and associates have shown that on carefully selected high-quality but not expensive computers it is possible to perform several billion computational operations per second, using Intel's Performance Libraries software packages and well-known algorithms for digital processing of signals and images. Computers must be equipped with appropriate peripheral units. Standard programming packages for the collection and processing of audio and video signals, complemented by the necessary user and system software support, can completely replace a range of professional AV and communication devices of very high cost, and enable the achievement of the goal of the project: realization of the technical system of superior or equal quality to the present, and significantly lower prices.

Electronic publications and teleeducation materials from the course Signals and systems

Head: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The course Signals and Systems is a fundamental subject in the field of electrical engineering, and is taught at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Osijek. The first electronic materials for presentations from this course were prepared in 1995. Through the academic research network CARNet on January 23, 1997, the first remote lecture was held in Croatia, where the lecturer (the leader of this project) held a remote lecture from Zagreb, and he was accompanied and actively participated by students from Osijek. From 1997 until today, the classes and exams from this subject are regularly conducted through the telecasteries at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Osijek. Electronic Materials intended for presentations of the course and the distant lectures are updated every year.
Within this project, a thorough redesign of existing electronic materials and the creation of new ones is proposed. Digital interactive textbooks from all segments of the course would be permanently available to students through the Internet, and would be adapted to individual pre-knowledge and aspirations. The possibility of individual student dislocated in the process of teaching, both in regular terms and outside them would be realized. An information exchange system would be developed, which would allow an individualized approach to learning through consultation. Electronic consultations would include frequently asked questions and answers, a system for exchange of information between students and teachers, as well as between student working groups.

Electronic publications and teleeducation materials from the course Random processes in systems

Head: Prof. Sven Lončarić, PhD

The Course Random Processes in Systems is one of the basic subjects in the field of electrical engineering, and is taught at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb. The first electronic materials for presentations from this course were prepared as early as 1999. Electronic materials intended for presentation of courses and distant materials were supplemented and perfected every year. Since the school year 1999/2000. This course is held in accordance with the recommendations of the FER Council in a way that is common at universities in America and Europe. During the semester, students collect points on laboratory exercises, control tasks and seminar papers, and the points form a final assessment. The process of teaching and testing is interactive and lasts a full semester. All information about the scoring system and the curriculum is found on the subjects server.
This project proposes a thorough redesign of existing electronic materials and the creation of new ones that will be available via the Internet. Digital interactive textbooks from all segments of the course would be permanently available to students, and they would be adapted to individual knowledge and aspirations. The possibility of individual students being dislocated in the process of teaching, both in regular terms and outside them would be achieved. A system for exchanging information between students and teachers, which would enable an individualized approach to learning through consultations. Electronic consultations would include frequently asked questions and answers, a system for exchanging information between students and teachers, as well as between student working groups.

3D segmentation of abdominal aortic aneurysm

Head: Prof. Sven Lončarić, PhD

The project is a continuation of a semi-automatic segmentation method that is based on 2D active contours with the addition of 3D interaction between slices. The continuation of the work is based on the use of a level-set method that has proven to be more advanced than the active contours. Level-set algorithm has the ability to change the topology, disassemble and merge. The 3D deformable model is used to segment the inner wall of the aorta while it is externally segmented with the help of a 2D deformable model on each slice. Software development interface IDL while the processing required piece of code is written in C.
